per http://lists.osuosl.org/pipermail/darcs-users/2009-January/017023.html running "darcs optimize --checkpoint" with darcs-2.1.2 made a repository (darcs-1-format) that darcs-1.0.8 and darcs-1.0.9rc1 can't get.

Checkpoints are going away in Darcs-2.4. We're going to start pushing harder for people to use hashed repositories and --lazy instead of --partial.
