Knowing exactly which version of darcs I'm using would help diagnose  
problems such as issue687, but "darcs --exact-version" gives me:

Presumably this is because you didn't have darcs useable when you
configured your build of darcs, so there was no way to figure out the exact
version (thus unknown).  Either that, or there's a bug in the configure
script.  More information about how you configured and built darcs will be
needed in order to fix this.

I think the problem was that I didn't know I needed darcs to be  
present in order to get the --exact-version feature.  I have  
sometimes uninstalled the old darcs before building the new darcs.

I don't remember for sure if I did that with the binary in question,  
but I just tried rebuilding on Mac OS X and I did make sure that  
darcs was present and the resulting executable had --exact-version.

So, let's close this ticket, and if anyone knows a spot in the build  
doc where this could be explained that might be good.
