Issue	Issue687 don't clean out pristine cache except when optimizing.

I just double-checked, and the three-line "to reproduce" script in msg3859 does
indeed result in this error on Mac OS X:

darcs failed:  binary patch to ./misc/dependencies/darcsver-1.1.1.tar.gz
couldn't apply.
