Hm.  So I tried to reproduce this by pulling and rebuilding my  
darcs-2 and this time the problem didn't happen:

What's the meaning of that --version string, anyway?  I get the  
"2.0.0" part, and I understand the "+ 37 patches" part, but what's  
the other "2.0.0" and the parens?
