darn.   The particular baseline I started from isn't on darcs.haskell.org any more, it seems, so I'll put it up at

        http://research.microsoft.com/~simonpj/tmp/ghc-HEAD-2007-08-29-ghc-corelibs-testsuite.tar.bz2

Untar that and try
        darcs pull http://darcs.haskell.org/ghc -av

I get the "problem gzopening.." error.
