Issue	Issue687 don't clean out pristine cache except when optimizing.

To summarise: trying to get from a repository that is simultaneously being
recorded to sometimes blows up.  Is that correct?

Hmm.  I guess you could cook up a little Perl script to try and reproduce this
scenario with a toy repository.  The trick of doing many iterations of the same
thing until it blows up could be helpful.
