OK, so even though Darcs thought my repository was fine, Simon suggested
I get a new one (still --partial). Then I pulled my patch from the
other (crashing) repository. And now I can undo it!!
Transcript below.
My conclusion: my repository was screwed up somehow. I will preserve it
in case you wish to examine its entrails.
Meanwhile I'm rolling again.

Ah, so this was a partial repo. Does it make any difference if
you do _not_ answer "no" to any other patches in the unrecord
dialogue?

I have no idea. I don’t want to un-record all the other patches -- that would be a disaster!

Yes, that's what I did. In the transcript I sent I think I answered 'n'
to one or two more patches before saying 'd', but then I tried again
saying 'd' the first time, as you suggest. Same problem.
I'm not at work now but I'll do the -v thing on Monday if you want
