How recent? I have noticed some extra directory structure with
cabal-2.4.1.0, but that didn't cause problems; or perhaps I just didn't
realize darcs-test may use a wrong darcs? (That would be bad!)

I'm not quite sure, I only just started having problems running the test
harness having recently done a cabal v2-update after a few months' gap.

I think the structure has changed several times. With whatever versions
I have now it looks like tests and executables go into separate trees
("t" and "x").  I don't think it's likely you'd get a wrong darcs, it
just won't find it.

Okay, fine, definitive improvement. Please regard as reviewed (I'm a bit
overwhelmed ATM, so I'd ask you to self-accept).
