A couple of issues with the packed get: - there is no progress reporting; "downloading packfile basic.tgz from http://darcs.net" would do... - I get: darcs: user error (Couldn't fetch `0000112697- 31055409dc29fb8307813610594b0b4c5c66b26bf6dd5367eecad70426c29bad' in subdir inventories from sources: thisrepo:/var/tmp/darcs.net -- this is presumably due to outdated inventory list in basic.tgz: such errors should be silently ignored

Sounds like there is a clear plan forward on fixing the scary messages, so marking need-implementation. Note: it could be worthwhile to have a test for this for how darcs behaves when the inventory list in basic.tgz is out of date. The bit about progress reporting is issue1905

I recommend this be addressed by defaulting to --nopacks for 2.8, and moving this target to 2.10.
