Because darcs does not handle backspace in the expected way when I find it
almost impossible to add reasonable patch names. This is extremely
irritating.

What is it not doing correctly for you? Perhaps you could give us
more information about your computer (is it windows/linux/mac?), the
version of darcs and instructions on how to reproduce what you're
experiencing. I've never had backspace be mishandled when using
'darcs record'. Also, there is a command line option, -m, to set the
patch name.
So you could do:
darcs record -m "This is my patch name and backspace handling will be
done by my shell"
Then record the changes you want and you should be good to go.

For what it's worth, I think I've had trouble with backspace under rxvt on
Windows. (never on Linux or Mac, I don't think)
Sticking a 'bug' priority on this, although I suspect it is at best 'not-our-bug'

This solution appeals to me.
