In the one minute I devoted to running your test, I'm not clear as to what
the bug is, or how to see it. I think some more explanation would be
helpful.

if you run the script, a newline seems to be missing in
darcs2git.tmpdarcs/_darcs/inventory

Just to be clear, is the issue in question the missing newline in the inventory?
Or is there a more alarming problem?
(David, does the inventory parsing code care?)
I suppose that this kind of thing might matter for tools that try to parse the
darcs inventory which aren't darcs proper.

Yes.

this is exactly the case. For my darcs2git convertor, darcs invocations
are the bottleneck, so I try to minimize those by reading the repo
directly.
