the help for the darcs push command mentions a "--matches" flag which is
supposed to take a pattern.

I've tried a "not" pattern that I've previously verified as working with the
darcs annotate command (where the option is documented as "--matches" rather
than "--match"; I wonder if it matters?), but it didn't filter any patch out
when used with the darcs push command.

perhaps I'm misunderstanding something?
this is using darcs 1.0.8.

Is it perhaps offering to push patches which are depended on by the
patches you match?

oh.  this is the case, indeed.
sorry for the rash bug report!

(as an aside, it would perhaps be a good idea for the push/pull 
commands, when the "-v" flag is given (thus causing all the actionable 
patches to be listed), to somehow indicate patches that are depended-on 
but not explicitly asked-for as such, maybe even saying which 
explicitly-requested patches depend on them).
